360 video comparison: 2017 Samsung Gear 360 vs. Kodak PIXPRO SP360 4K Dual Pro

How does the 2017 Samsung Gear 360 compare against last year's video quality champ?  Check out these comparison videos.

Last year, I found that the Kodak SP360 4k Dual Pro had the best video quality among consumer 360 cameras.  I thought it would be interesting to compare the 2017 Gear 360 against the SP360 4K Dual Pro.  Here's a playlist with a sample from the SP360 4K Dual Pro and another sample from 2017 Gear 360.

Here are screenshots (the bluish one is the SP360 4K).

For near objects, the SP360 4K Dual Pro was sharper and more detailed.

For distant objects, the SP360 was also more detailed.  In the SP360 sample below, you can see the texture of the far wall.

On the 2017 Gear 360, the texture on the wall is not visible.

On the other hand, the stitching on the Gear 360 is far superior:

In summary, the Kodak SP360 4k Dual Pro appears to be sharper and more detailed than the 2017 Gear 360, but the Gear 360 has much better stitching, not to mention a much easier workflow with only one camera to manage (instead of two cameras, two batteries, two memory cards and two files).

The 2017 Gear 360 is now available on Amazon or on eBay.  The Kodak SP360 4K Dual Pro is available on Amazon or B&H Photo.

    1. Hi Sklba. The 2017 gear 360 might not have the highest detail but it's still pretty good imho, maybe second only to the sp360 (so far).

      Best regards,

  2. I'm guessing with the right Autopano template, the stitching error problem on the Dual Pro is easily resolved?

    1. Hi Martin. Possibly, because Autopano uses optical flow stitching. But i dont know because I havent tried it.

  3. I was so excited about getting the 2017 Gear 360 but I'm hearing the Mac software is bad, iPhone app constantly crashing, quality not as good as even older cameras. Maybe I should hold off a few years on 360 cams.

  4. the GEAR360 2017 has only 8Mpix (vs 15Mpix for 2016 model) this shows up in the photo resolution but why does not it also translate in better video quality for the 2016 model, even if the video output is the same, does the 2016 model does line/pixel skipping for video instead of image downsampling) ?
