Insta360 Air review: why this $129 camera is the best 360 camera for personal use

Here's my review of the Insta360 Air, a 360 camera accessory for Android phones.

The Insta360 Air is a 360 camera accessory for Android phones.  It's made by Insta360, which was the first company to create 360 cameras as smartphone accessories with the Nano, which became very popular.

I posted my first impressions here.  I've now had the Insta360 Air for almost two months (with a preproduction version since January 2017), and it just keeps getting better.  I now have it with me almost all the time.  Here's why I think it's the best 360 camera for personal use (if you have a compatible Android smartphone).  BTW the video is 20 mins. long (I tried to be as succinct as possible) but if you want the low-down, there's an executive summary for you upfront (at the 0:44 mark).

The Insta360 Air is available from Amazon here: for  Micro USB and for USB Type C.  If you would like to get the Air, I would greatly appreciate it if you could kindly consider using the Amazon affiliate links above, which would support 360 Rumors at no additional cost to you, so I can do more tests and reviews.  Thank you very much!  And if you found the video helpful, I would be very grateful if you could hit the like button and share it with friends who might be interested!  Thanks again!

  1. I dislike any gear that is smartphone specific, or operating system specific.

    1. Thanks Steve. I can understand why. The good thing is that the Air it low cost so it minimzes your exposure.

    2. Insta360 first came out for iOS, only now it's available for Android. The iOS version is slightly more expensive but can be used separate from your phone. However, I've looked at the specs for both versions and found its quality to be lower than even LG 360 camera. For this kind of price though, beggars can't be choosers.

  3. So if I have 2 smartphones, one with type-C and the other with micro-USB then I need 2 insta360 Air or is there a way to connect to both smartphones with one insta360 Air ?

    1. Hi Joao! I think you can get an Insta360 Air with Type C, and then get a a Type C to Micro USB converter when using with your Micro USB phone. However, I haven't tried it myself. But I think it is worth trying it first before ordering two Insta360 Airs.

  4. Hi, and thanks for this review.
What's the stengths of this cam over the LG 360 (Which has higher still resolution, and can be used apart from the phone)?

    1. Hi 999. The LG 360 Cam is better for photos, and is more convenient for shooting. However, the Insta360 Air has better video because it will have image stabilization. The Air also has wireless livestreaming which the LG 360 Cam doesn't have, and the Air's realtime in-camera stitching makes it easier to review photos and videos and share them to social media (the LG has in-camera stitching for photos but needs the app to stitch videos). I will post a comparison between their photo and video quality soon. Thank you for your very good question.

  6. Has anyone looked at the JPG EXIF info containing the GPS location? I have exported directly from the camera & using INSTA360 Studio on 2 different phones & the GPS location isn't saved or not correct.
